Changes to Recent Reviews Page

Have you noticed that they Recent Reviews page looks a little different?

We trimmed down the time stamp that was displaying seconds, we reduced the breadcrumb trail to show only the item name and the list, we put the item name in bold, and we've added the image of the reviewer to the review.

Looks better, no?

We have one more tweak in the works as well....

  3. THanks guys. Numbah, I hear you on the Rate It button. But here's the deal - we need to phase out the rating pop up window. Too many people have pop up blockers now, and it causes a lot of confusion.

And if you think about it, it takes one click to trigger the pop up window - which is the same number of clicks it takes you to get to the item page where you can submit your review in the rating window.

The one thing you lose is still being on the recent comments page however...

  4. I see the two biggest class clowns are still present and accounted for. And on the same blog entry no less.

Damn Admin. I'll always be stunned that you prefer their tripe to the countless quality reviewers who either left or never stayed precisely because they are so omnipresent on the site.

But it will likely always be quality of over quantity. A real shame.

As for the pop-up blocker issue... All items have to be made to suit the biggest moron out there. Eve nthe ones who send in feedback stating they can never leave a comment because there are no boxes to enter it in.

And you send a kind reply back asking if they have their built-in windows pop-up blocker turned on.

IF they respond it would usually be a "Oh yeah... thanks".

Donovan still hasn't figured out how to add his name to comments properly and signs them. Bravo to Numbah who has. That marin corps training paid off with a little common sense.

My input on your "lost the recent comments" window...

Let users know with some text above the link that they can right click and choose to open in a new window.

There are also methods out their to make pages "sticky" but it would depend on your server types etc... and to some extent the security measures in place on each users PC.

  5. This pbeavr dude seems like a real idiot.

  6. Wow, I got and insult and a compliment all at once. PBeavr... what do I do about you? In the old days I'd just have at such a brazen misrepresentation of all that is numbah, but I'll let that comment be what it and have faith that the good people of RIA who might read this can see that comment for what it is, plus such engagements are not befitting a Jedi. Thanks for recognizing my aptitude for technology, at least, since I sign my name to any and all comments I make here.

  7. Should I end all my tripe with a particular closing? That Semper Fi got me thinging. Maybe "Semper Fi and may the Force be with you..."

  8. THINKING. Typing will come to me someday, I swear...

Semper Fi and may the Force be with you!

  9. pbeavr said "But it will likely always be quality of over quantity. A real shame." Is that a bad thing? I would always want quality over numbers...

  10. Si, he said it backwards. I know the way he meant it, but if he's gonna be picky about our words...

  11. Almost forgot...

  12. I knew as well but it shows that anyone can make mistakes even the beav...

  13. Are you out there, beav? Wow, I guess the ability to speak poorly of people on a blog is insignificant compared to the power of the Force.

Semper Fi and may the Force be with you, beav...

  14. I still wish there was a way to be notified when someone posts a comment on any of my reviews. The only way to do so now is going back and checking all the reviews from the first one.

  15. lmorovan, there is a check box you can click on to do that

  16. I did but never received any warning.

  17. lmorovan, do you have some kind of a spam blocker in place? I know these alerts are working because I get them myself.... they must be getting flagged as spam by your email provider.

  18. Lawrence, what is there to do when you discover that someone is consistently and continuously rate your reviews "funny" without even having the decency to leave a comment? Several dozens of my reviews are rated funny as soon as I post them. Can anything be done?

  19. lmorovan, I agree, it's obnoxious. It's one thing to express disagreement to a controversial political statement with a funny vote, but it's another to just go right down the page and mark well-written, non-controversial reviews as "funny." To me, that's starting to get personal.

    Let's see if it persists...

  20. Perhaps you might wish to consider including a feature that posts the alias of the member as soon as he/she rates a review.

(such, such, such) have rated helpful
    (such,such) have rated funny

    Just a thought.

  21. Elaborating on my previous entry:

This may prevent any attempt of manipulation of ratings and will expose those who do it.

  22. That's actually the way we do it on Facebook. Everytime a review is voted helpful / funny / agree, the recipient gets notified as to who gave the vote. I'm all for transparency - what worries me is an increased buddy system where you get a helpful vote, and you feel obliged to give one back.

  23. More on the topic:

every rating should be accompanied by a comment in order to be valid, even if it is "I like it", "I disagree", "I hate you", whatever. This will identify the rater and will give the chance to the reviewer to elaborate on his/her rating or discuss the issue (on private mails, of course).

Can you wave your magic wand and make the ads (on the right side of recent reviews) go away? I’m not interested Bucky Covington’s new music video or Ben Stein Expelled.

As for making who gave the helpful/funny/ agree vote public, I would rather be kept in the dark. The rating badge caused a lot of drama on your reviewer list. I’m not in a mood to deal with “You broke my heart when you gave me a funny on Feb 10, 2008.BLAH BLAH BLAH.”

  25. I won't make anything public. If you guys can help and let me know when you see dupe lists, that would be great... it's tough to keep track. As far as the ads, we have to pay the bills. Hosting costs are now over a grand per month....
