Lots of Weblist Activity

Wow, people are really getting busy on the Weblist front. At the time of this post, there had been 440 new listings created across 14 new Weblists in the last 24 hours or so.

Jesse222 has set up three lists relating to the board game HeroScape: HeroScape Tiles, HeroScape Teams, and HeroScape Characters. Unfortunately, I haven't played the game, so I can't participate.

RateItAll newcomer Moodeous has set up a list covering some of her favorite aspects of digital photography - the list covers both camers and Web sites.

Just back from an unsuccessful trip trying to spot some UFOs, Ridgewalker has set up a list of hypothetical, tongue in cheek reasons why aliens might want to visit earth.

Imapimp has continued his series of thematic, free style rhymes - this time with an R&B theme.

Indierocker has three new lists up: Batman Villains, Power Pop Classics, and Bands that Should have been One Hit Wonders.

And I'll wrap it up with a snapshot Kamy's well researched, and potentially helpful new list of pet insurance providers:

The Development Pipeline

Here's the stuff we're working on right now, in order:

1) Finishing the integration of the commenting feature - adding links to the recent reviews page that let folks comment on a review, adding a display of the number of comments each review has, etc.

2) Tweaking the review interface on the individual listing pages. We're getting rid of the Rate It! pop-up window on this particular page, and replacing it with a review field (similar to the commenting field).

3) Allowing HTML in item descriptions. This is going to enable all sorts of cool things like RateItAll Video, and Hot or Not style photo rating.

4) Allowing HTML in some profile fields. This is going to let people do some limited customizations of their profile pages (think MySpace), adding in "widgets" and "bling" if they so choose. More on this to follow.

Couple o' Press Releases

There have been two RateItAll press releases in the last week or so.

The first one is about the revenue sharing for reviews:

http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/8/prweb425832.htm

The second is about the new commenting feature:

http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/8/prweb429422.htm

Press releases are not usually the most interesting thing to read, but they do provide an additional glimpse into why RateItAll does the things it does.

More on Comments

So I'm really enjoying this commenting feature. It's nice to be able to react to reviews beyond that which is possible with the helpful / not helpful buttons.

But the obvious weakness of the feature is that there's no way to tell which reviews have comments. There's also no way to react to a review directly from the recent reviews page.

We're working on it.

Here are the two improvements that will be going live shortly:

1) We will display how many comments a given review has on the individual listing page (the page that aggregates the various reviews.)

2) We will provide a link to comment on reviews from the recent reviews page.

Feel free to send in other suggestions as to how we can get the most out of this new feature.

Rebuttals / Replies / Comments

Have you ever seen a review on RateItAll that was just dying for a rebuttal? Or a few words of praise? Or simply a clarification?

Well you can now comment / reply / rebut any review on the site. Just click through to the review page, and fill in the reply field, and you're good to go:

Over the next week or so, we'll be adding a few tweaks that let folks see which reviews have comments associated with them, as well as a page like the Recent Comments page, that lets folks see where the real conversations are going on.

I like this feature a lot, I think. One of the reasons that I enjoy writing on RateItAll is because of the instant feedback you get. This comment feature will go a long way towards strengthening that feedback factor.

(those that are paying VERY close attention will notice that "not helpful" votes are no longer being displayed on the review pages...the only places they are visible are on the recent comments page and on the reviewer comments page )

New Review Browsing Feature

We've added a new feature that lets folks easily browse through the various reviews for a given item.

Stay tuned for a few more tweaks to this new format as we work to get it right.

Sort Reviews by Helpfulness

We turned on a sort feature that lets you sort all the reviews for a particular item by helpfulness. Here's an example for the movie Shawshank Redemption:

For this particular movie, there are 146 different reviews. I think it's nice to have a way to separate the quality reviews from the one liners.

The filter can be found at the bottom of the ratings list, on the right hand side.

Do does it work? I read a couple of the most helpful reviews, and to my relief.... they were quite helpful :)

I've also upped the default display of reviews to 20 - up from 10. In the truncated format, we're able to get more on the page without hurting performance.

You (We) Are the Web - A Rant

You guys, it's getting crazy out there.

The hottest, biggest, fastest growing sites on the Web - YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, Wikipedia - have one important thing in common:

These businesses are all being built on our collective backs. The reason those sites are doing well is because of the volunteer labor of the folks who use them. If nobody contributed content to those sites, they wouldn't exist.

Each of these sites is commanding a valuation in the hundreds of millions to billions of dollars. MySpace was sold for $580M. If it was sold today, it would get more. Facebook reportedly is looking for $2B to sell. YouTube is the fastest growing site in the world. Wikipedia, though in a different category, has created the largest encyclopedia in the world, with just a handful of employees.

Yet, interestingly, none of those sites is sharing any revenue with the people who are responsible for their success - you, us, the users. Not a penny. You build it, and they keep all of the money.

Now big companies and venture capital firms are realizing that people are happy to work for these Web sites for free. Thousands of new "user generated content" sites are launching. Thousands hoping to be the next YouTube, the next MySpace - thousands hoping they can slap together a site, and have volunteers make it worth millions.

It ain't right, and it ain't sustainable. It took me a while to realize that revenue sharing is the only possible direction for RateItAll, but I'm happy to say that we are still one of the only sites on the Web to step up to the plate on this.

I am extremely conscious of the fact that RateItAll is sustained by its members. You guys create the lists, you create the reviews, you keep the lists updated, and you create the profiles. You are RateItAll.

You tell me that you don't care about the money, that it's not the reason you post on RateItAll.

That's fine, and I believe you. I don't want that to change. I want folks to keep doing what they're doing, and doing what makes them happy. But I want you to realize somewhere in the back of your mind, that I am going to do my very best to ensure that you are treated fairly by this site. That if you create something - a review, a profile, a weblist - that earns somebody money, that you will see a share.

I want RateItAll to be a place that you trust to house your opinions on anything - a safe storage place for your thoughts. I want you to know that you will earn a share of revenue that is earned off content you contribute to the RIA community, that we will give you the tools to take those opinions with you as you make your presence felt around the Web, and that you can leave us whenever you want, removing all of your stuff from our database in the process.

This is starting to sound a little preachy. Just to be clear on this, a desire to be fair is not the only reason we are sharing revenue. We are also sharing revenue because, strategically, we believe that giving folks the tools to make money from their opinions will make the pie bigger for all of us, and will inrease the overall quality of the content produced. I also think that if the history of capitalism is any guide, all user generated content sites will eventually be paying their contributors.

My hope is that by moving aggressively in the area of revenue sharing, we're going to put some pressure on the big boys. If you create a profile on MySpace, you won't see a dime of the advertising revenue associated with your pictures and thoughts. Shouldn't you? If you post a review on Amazon or Yelp or any of the other review sites, those sites will use your work to make money off it. They won't share that money with you, and furthermore, they claim a perpetual license on your work, meaning that they may not remove it from their databases - even if you ask them to.

Things are only going to change if somebody rocks the boat. Come help us rock that boat.

So just to summarize, here are the ways you can make money on RIA:

- Create a profile with a picture - 100% of the Google ad rotations
- Build a Weblist - 50% of the Google ad rotations
- Add a listing to an existing ratings list - 50% of the Google ad rotations
- Refer a friend - 10% of the Google ad rotations on their qualifying pages
- Write a review - 50% of the Google ad rotations

Join RateItAll today.

We Are Now Sharing Revenue on Reviews

We can add writing reviews to the list of things we are sharing revenue on as part of the RateItAll Economy program.

Here is the complete list of ways to make money on RateItAll:

Writing a review (you get 50% of Google ad rotations)
Creating a profile with a picture (you get 100% of Google ad rotations)
Creating a Weblist (you get 50% of Google ad rotations)
Adding a Listing to a Ratings List (you get 50% of Google ad rotations)
Inviting Friends to Join (you get 10% rotations on pages they contribute)

They way we are including reviews into this program is by giving each review its own url. In addition to letting us share revenue, this structure will enable some other cool stuff like:

- Share this review with a friend
- Flag this review as inappropriate
- Rebut this review

All of these things should be turned on in the next few weeks.

As always with these sorts of changes, we will be tweaking things over the next few days to make stuff is working properly.

Some changes rolling in right now...

10:05PM PST. It shouldn't be long before we're back up.

We may have a little downtime tonight...

.... we're rolling in some changes... including:

(drum roll please)

hooking up reviews into the RateItAll Economy program. So now, instead of sharing revenue on just Weblist, Profiles, New Listings, and Referring Friends... if you write a review, we will be sharing revenue on that page as well.

I'm pretty excited about this - as always, there will be some tweaking required before we get the format right.

A bunch of nice, new Weblists

Folks have been busy on the Weblist front. First and foremost is Ridge's celebratory one year RIA anniversary (congrats Ridge!) list on favorite vacations.

For you HBO fans, HKK has set up a lists about characters from the tv show Rome and Carnivale. Jamie McBain has compiled a list of Devo songs. Coizinha has continued her exploration of bachelor and bachelorette parties. DawnsDinos has put together a nice collection of Web sites about television.

Resident military history expert Sarkia has listed some of the more memorable military retreats in history.

And for the political junkies, Indierocker gives you the opportunity to define yourself politically.

Here's a snapshop of Ridge's list:

RateItAll Economy Bug

Guys, we've just fixed a bug with the RateItAll Economy program. If you haven't been seeing any results in your Google Adsense account, it's possible that it's because your account was not configured properly on your RateItAll profile page.

We've gone through and fixed all of the accounts in our database. Results should start showing up properly today.

Thanks to Louiethe20th for helping us to identify this problem.

Please help me spread the word about this fix!

In the News

Some people and stuff in the news: Floyd Landis, Lebanon, Israel, Hezbollah, Google, MySpace, Jimmie Johnson, Tiger Woods, Mel Gibson, Joe Lieberman, Talladega Nights...

Tagging Trends

Even though only about 50% of RateItAll's ratings lists have been tagged, some interesting trends are emerging.

The most popular list tags on RateItAll:

Travel

Tourism

History

Politics

Destinations

Movies

USA

Music

America

Sports

The most popular people tags on RateItAll:

Music

Travel

Movies

Photography

Computers

Politics

Reading

Baseball

Basketball

Football

There seems to be plenty of correlation between the ways that folks identify themselves, and the sorts of lists that folks are creating. But there also seems to be gaps / opportunities - for example, where are the photography lists? It's one of the most popular people tags, yet there only a few lists tagged with that word.

As we continue to get caught up on tagging, it will be interesting to see what trends emerge.
