Flame Warriors are stereotypes of online personalities created by a guy named Mike Reed. Kamylienne pulled this list together a while back, and it's pretty amusing - I think many of us will identify characteristics of RIA reviewers on this list. I find his work to be really amusing and creative.

More Widget Stuff

Well, we've been working very hard trying to get the RateItAll dynamic widgets ready for prime time.

I think we now have them to a point where I'm getting a little more comfortable. They work on Blogger, MySpace, TypePad and other formats. The resize to fit any width, including very narrow blog sidebars.

Both the dynamic and static widget now allow interaction - rating and reviewing (and even RIA registration) directly from the site that is hosting the widget.

But I'm looking for more data. I'm hoping some of the RIA regulars who are also bloggers will help me out and try putting a widget (maybe one of their Weblists?) on their blog.

If you need help in adding a widget to your blog, ask me. In exchange for helping me test this feature, I'd be happy to write up your blog on this blog, and maybe provide you with little more exposure.

The RateItAll widget code can be found at the bottom of any RateItAll ratings list or Weblist. See below for an example.

Technical Difficulties

RateItAll's hosting provider is experiencing technical difficulties. They assured me that they are working on the issue.

Dynamic Widgets

OK, we've just launched a new version of the RateItAll Widget - that piece of code that you see at the bottom of any RateItAll ratings list that lets you put any RateItAll ratings list or Weblist on your own site.

You will now see two options for your widget: 1) Dynamic; and 2) Static.

A static widget is one that works on MySpace profiles, Friendster profiles, and other sites that don't allow you to use scripts. This type of widget is just a snapshot of a RateItAll ratings list at a given point in time. It doesn't update as the ratings change, and it doesn't allow you to rate directly from the widget. It's recommended that you update your widget code from time to time in order to display accurate rating data.

The dynamic widget takes this concept a step further. Once you add this bit of code to your site, it will update automatically as more ratings come in. Even better, a dynamic widget allows people to rate stuff, directly from your site. Folks who are logged in to RateItAll can trigger a Rate It! window directly from the widget, and those who do not yet have a membership, will trigger a hybrid Rate It! / registration page.

Dynamic Widgets currently work on any site that accepts scripts including Typepad, Blogger (tempage section only), and any personal Web site.

For those of you looking to add an interactive component to your sites, I can't imagine an easier way than the RateItAll dynamic widget.

For an example of a dynamic widget, please note the "Feedback on RateItAll's Redesign" section in the left margin of this page. Try rating something to try it out.

Where things will get really interesting is when we integrate the RateItAll Economy program into these widgets.

Picture this: you create a world class Weblist about some topic that captures the imagination of some blogger. That blogger puts your Weblist on their blog by copying the widget code. Included in the widget code is some ad code, that tracks back to your Google Adsense ID.

More bloggers and Webmasters see this widget, and want it on their own sites. Each time it's published, your ads are showing up. Suddenly thousands of people who have never heard of RateItAll are seeing your Weblist, some of whom are clicking on your ads.

This is the power of Widgets + Google Adsense, and we'll be working hard to make this a reality in the coming months.

Trialing a New Ad Format

We are trialing a new ad format on the RateItAll item pages, recent comments pages, and reviewer comment pages. These ads are not showing up on Weblists or local pages.

The format is called inline advertising. If you see a double underlined word within the body of a review, clicking on it will show an ad.

What I like about it is that it doesn't take up an additional space on the page. What I don't like about it is that it is a slight distraction from the page. However, you won't see the ad unless you click on the double underlined word.

If I had my way, there wouldn't be any advertising on the site. The reality is we have to pay the bills however.

I'm going to try this out for a month and see how it goes.

Key Links

I made the executive decision to replace the Recent Comments snapshot on the home page, with a collection of key links.

Here's why I did it:

1) I was frustrated about not being able to get to a few key pages from the home page (New Additions, Blog, Weblist Tag Cloud, People Tag Cloud)

2) It seemed that people weren't giving as many helpful votes as they were just skimming the comments from the home page - and there are no helpful / not helpful buttons on the home page.

New Feature: Testimonials

I think that a big part of the enjoyment of RIA from a writing perspective, is in the instant feedback that you get from the community. Whether it be a rebuttal post, a helpful vote, or a blurb on the RateItAll Reviewers list.

Well we just launched another feedback mechanism - this feature is called "Testimonials" and it allows any registered member to post feedback on the profile page of any other RateItAll member.

Recipients of feedback / testimonials can delete stuff that they find offensive - though in the spirit of RateItAll, I would hope that we go easy on the delete feature.

You can post a testimonial about any RateItAll reviewer by clicking the link that says "Write a Testimonial about _____" that appears on the left hand side of every profile page.

You can write more than one testimonial about the same reviewer, but you can't write a testimonial about yourself.

To turn off email notifications of when people post new testimonials about you, just click the link at the bottom of your profile page in the testimonials section.

Updating the Site

We're rolling in a few tweaks, as well as one new feature.

Site performance may be a little dicey for the next 15 minutes or so.

New Weblist Editing Tool

You may have noticed that there is now a new editing tool showing up on your Weblists. If you look closely on any of the pages in your Weblists, you'll see a link that says "Owner Edit."

This is what it looks like:

















I think you'll find that this is a MUCH easier way to edit pages within your Weblists. Rather than going through your profile page every time, you can launch the editing tool right from the page.

Remember, only you see this Owner Edit link - others viewing your lists do not see the link.

Fun with Tags

In case you haven't noticed, we just launched two new pages:

A tag cloud for Weblists

and

A tag cloud for people

Clicking on a keyword will display all the Weblists (or people) who have been tagged with that keyword.

I think this is a pretty neat way to find stuff, whether it be Weblists about things that you are interested in, or people who share interests with you.

The bigger the tag in the cloud, the more things that have been tagged with that word.

We'll be making some tweaks to the formatting over the next few weeks, but I think this is a great start.

Vacation

I've been on vacation for the past week with very limited Internet access. Inevitably, a few things broke just when I dropped out of contact - Profile Pages and Helpful Buttons.

I think we have both of these things worked out now.

Da Vinci Code

If you've read the newspapers or turned on the news during the last couple of weeks, you would have noticed a tremendous amount of hype about the movie The Da Vinci Code.

Well there are three outstanding, even handed Da Vinci Code reviews by Stark, GTH, and MA on RateItAll. Personally, I tend to trust these three more than I do the pro critics.

Couple Updates

OK, we finally got that image display bug worked out on the "Reviewers Most Interested In" section. It's finally showing the correct images, not old images from our test server.

Also, now, if you click on a People Tag, below the photos of all the other people tagged with that keyword, it will show you all the Weblists tagged with that word.

For example, clicking on the Travel tag off of Abichara's profile displays not only other people tagged with travel, but also the Weblists that have been tagged with that word. It also shows related tags.

I think this could be a neat way to match folks with things that they might like to rate.

Some General Weblist Tagging Principles

The thing about Weblist tags, is that they only work of people choose the same word to capture the same concepts.

For example, if Genghis tags all of his movie lists with the word "films," and Ridge tags all of his with the word "movies," they're not going to correlate. Clicking on the tag "films" is not going to display Weblists with the tag "movies."

So here are some general principles to help people get on the same page:

- Use plurals, not singulars
- Don't be afraid to use multiple words to describe the same thing (e.g. use "films" AND "movies")
- There are no "wrong" tags - tagging is a personal exercise. You should tag your Weblists with what they mean to you. Don't be afraid to have a lot of tags.
- Don't use "-" or any other symbols. Multi word tags should be written like this: "civilwar" not "civil-war"
- One tag per line

Sorting Weblists

Did you know that when you are "viewing all" with a reviewer's Weblists, that there's a sort feature?

You can sort alphabetically, by number of items, or by date. It's at the bottom right, as shown below:

And it's nice.

Check out the list of tags being displayed on most of the newer Weblists. Click on a tag and it shows you other Weblists tagged with the same word.

Also, it shows you people who are tagged with the same word.

Here's an example:

Click on the tag Art, and see what you find.

To ensure that your Weblists get maximum exposure, it's probably a good idea to go back and tag your older ones so they start showing up on these tag pages.

Recent Comments Bug Now Fixed

We fixed that recent comments bug where some reviews were not showing on the recent comments page.

What was happening was that a Weblist privacy feature that we're working on (for folks who don't want their Weblist visible to the masses) was kicking in unexpectedly.

All of the Weblists that were accidentally assigned "semi-private" status have been moved back to public.

New Feature-cito

Here's a very small, new feature that you may or may not have noticed.

When you go to edit an existing review, you'll now see a "delete" button in the pop-up window. This does exactly what it sounds like - it removes the rating and review from the database.

Before, you could clear a review, but there was no way to permanently remove a rating. Now there is.

This probably isn't that big of a deal, but it's nice to have.

Bush and Bin Laden

Should President Bush be held accountable for Osama Bin Laden still being at large? It's a tough question.

Click HERE to see smart, well-written, arguments and both sides. I specifically would like to point to EDT4's and EO's posts. Both forceful. Both passionate. But both civil in their tone.

This is what I like about RIA. We're not an echo chamber for any one particular ideology or viewpoint. You will find people whose opinions you diametrically oppose. But somehow we keep it together, and (usually) remain civil.

Recent Comments Bug

There's a confirmed bug on the Recents Comments page. Some recent comments are not showing up on the Recent Comments page, but are showing up properly on the home page.

We are working on it.

Need Some Help

Several people have reported a problem with duplicate listings showing up in their Weblists. In other words, when they add a new item to their Weblist, it's showing up sometimes as many as four to eight times.

I am unable to recreate this bug - if anyone else has experienced this, please pass on the details (what browser you're using, what weblist it happened on, and any other info that might help us isolate the issue.)

New Things to Rate

There was a bug on the New Things to Rate page that prevented us from displaying the newest Weblists. I think we have this fixed now.

We have put in one hour caching on this page for performance reasons - what this means is that it may take up to an hour for a new Weblist to show up. But it will show up.

Tag Those Weblists!

We're getting closer to launching the tagging output functionality for Weblists. Here's how it's going to work:

Every Weblist is going to display their keyword tags prominently right below the Weblist title. Clicking on a keyword tag will display all the other Weblists that have been tagged with that keyword.

For example, the "Biggest Jerks in Sports" weblist has a tag of "villains" - clicking on the word "villains" will show all the other lists that have been tagged with that some word, across all categories.

It's basically going to work exactly the same way as the People Tags, and I think it's going to be a great way to find clusters of Weblists that you are interested in, and to gain more visibility for your own Weblists.

In the meantime, RateItAll's crack team of taggers (uhhh... me) is going through and helping out with the tagging process to try and provide some consistency in word choice.

New Feature - a RateItAll Widget

OK, you can now put a snapshot of any RateItAll ratings list on your personal Web site or page. This format works with MySpace, Friendster, etc.

To do so, scroll down to the bottom of any ratings list page on RateItAll, and click on the section that says "Put this List on your Web site." Just copy and paste that code into your site's template and it's done.

You can now search for RateItAll reviewers by their People Tags.

The next step will be a tag cloud, that will look something like this.

I think this is a pretty good tool for making sure your tags match what others are doing... for example, if I tag myself "hoops" but someone else tags themselves "bball," we're not going to match. It may be worth it to double check your tags in the search to get the most mileage out of this feature...

A Little Bit on Tagging

Some of you may have noticed a change to the "Expert Tag" fields on the profile. Specifically, "Expert Tags" have become just "Tags," and the instructions say to use this field for Areas of Expertise, Interests, and Groups.

Let me give you some background on what happened.

First, StarkTruth wrote me and suggested that "Areas of Expertise" was too limiting - that "Areas of Interest" might be more useful. This made a lot of sense to me, as the whole point of this feature will be to help folks find other folks who share interests, and not just to find an expert.

Then, designer extraordinaire Wurkit made a supa fly comment about how he was going to "abuse" the expert tag feature to stay abreast of what his friends from RefreshPhoenix were reviewing.

I found this brilliant. I've often wondered about an easy way to filter reviews by various sub groups on. The Trusted Network functionality is cool, but it's one size fits all. Maybe I trust someone for one thing like music, but not so much for politics.

For example, I have a number of mini social networks that I keep in touch with. There's my friends from high school, my friends from college, the folks from my Web2.0 stuff, the guys from my hoops team, the various sides of my family, folks from other forums, etcetera.

Many of these folks get on RIA at one point or another. What this tagging feature is going to do is to allow me to filter reviews by one group or another, by just clicking a link.

For example, some of my tags include:

haas (my wife's school friends)
wmw (an online forum that i particpate in)
web2.0

All I have to do is to circulate these tags among my groups, and presto, I'll have an instant filter to find out what each particular subgroup is talking about.

An obvious example would be a TrinityOfEvil tag for Numbah, BlueOrchid, and Madhatter. By tagging themselves by this group, the trinity of evil can stay easily abreast of all of the evil things spewing from their compadres.

This will all make more sense once we launch the output part of this feature.... hopefully this will be later this week.

So this tagging feature can now be helpful for 1) finding people who share interests; 2) finding an expert in something specific; 3) and staying on top of what our particular subgroups are talking about.

Is this as cool as I think it is, or am I just being a geek?

Toddler Hockey Fight

My friend Greg Hartnett, of Best of the Web fame, showed me this video last week in Boston. His four year old son had apparently been harassed throughout toddler hockey practice. Finally, Jr. snapped and sent a message to any and all in his way.

New Listing Suggestions

We're currently backlogged about 700 new listing suggestions across RIA, Weblists, and Local. The reason? The new RateItAll admin site has lagged the redesign in terms of actually working.

I hope to get Admin Site functionality back today, and we'll start working through your suggestions.

Making Weblists

Between the bigger type and the cleaner interface, I think publishing Weblists is about twice as easy now. I encourage folks to give it a spin if they haven't tried it yet... it's pretty easy.

We're working on integrating "Edit Page" links for Weblist publishers that will be visible to them when they are on their own Weblists. This should make it easier to edit pages on the fly.

One other note - make sure to take full advantage of the Weblist tagging functionality... while the output of this feature is not live yet, it's going to be a great way to get your Weblist more exposure - both through search and through having your Weblists show up automatically as "related" on other Weblists that are tagged with the same keywords.

Economist Article

There's a big article in the most recent Economist magazine about participatory media - things like blogs, wikis, and yes, review sites like RateItAll.

I like this quote:

".... had put his finger on something big: that in least in democratic societies, everbody does have the right to hold opinions, and that the urge to connect and converse with others is so basic that it might as well be added to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Pretty powerful stuff, and something that I enthusiastically agree with.

BTW, Magellan has set up a Weblist of the various types of social media sites.

Bug Progress

Little by little, we're stamping out bugs.

You may have noticed that paragraphs are back in comments, the "submit" and "cancel" buttons on the RateIt window are back where they belong, that you can now "view all" and scroll through all items on the ratings list page, and that annoying Google Maps pop up has been eradicated.

Please keep the bug reports coming... my list is down to about 85 now - there's still a ways to go to tighten this thing up.

Paging Bug on Ratings Lists

Thanks to MA and Ridge who have alerted me to a bug with the paging functionality (see next 20) on ratings lists pages.

Currently, the link to see the final 20 items on a ratings list is not displaying. So if there are 64 items on a list, there's no way to get to the last four.

We're working on fixing this... we're also going to restore the "View All" option on ratings lists.

There's also a bug with adding punctuation to Weblist titles and listings. For example, Zuchinibut's "Characters from 24" list looks a little screwy. This one will also be fixed shortly.

Again, thanks for all the great feedback. We're fixing bugs as fast as we can, and I think we should have most of the big stuff taken care of soon.

More Redesign Stuff

A couple of clarifications:

- To create a Weblist, click the "edit/create/manage" link on your profile. I saw someone saying that creating Weblists is no longer free... i have no idea where that came from. Weblists are free and will be so for the foreseeable future. I suggest that if someone is asking you for money on RateItAll, that you politely decline to give it to them.

- There used to be a feature that let Weblist publishers view all comments that had been left in their Weblist. We're working on bringing that feature back ASAP - leaving it out was an oversight, and not any planned thing.

- The View All link on ratings lists is coming back.

- The paragraph thing is a bug. We're working on restoring the ability to use paragraphs in reviews.

- If you have to scroll horizontally to fully see a page. It's a bug. Please provide me with details if this is happening to you.

I would really appreciate it if folks could try and separate redesign feedback from bug feedback - obviously, if something doesn't work, it's not going to get a high rating :)

Please continue to send the bug reports in to me, and we'll get this thing cleaned up. Thanks for your patience.

Some Thoughts on the Redesign

I just wanted to give a quick thanks to everyone for their patience as we went through this important face lift. Many of you participated in testing, and many more provided feedback.

The utter overhaul of the site is a bit of a shock. It looks nothing like it did before, and all of us are going through the process of figuring out how to get around again. Cluttered and dated as the old RIA was, it was a pretty friendly site that served us well.

I went into the redesign project with very simple goals - to make the site cleaner, friendlier, and readable. I think we made big progress in these areas, though the proof will have to come in the weeks and months to follow.

I'd also like to thank the company that build the design - 30 Second Rule. I chose this company because they understand online community, and are passionate about what they do.

Specifically, Dan Ritzenthaler was the lead designer, and he was fantastic to work with. Smart, cool, thoughtful - an absolute pro who takes a lot of pride in what he does. If you want to find him on RIA, he can be found HERE. And yes ladies, he's single.

Finally, Rob, Buddy, and Jan have been putting in some crazy hours recently to push this thing live. None of us have slept much the last two nights, and these guys stayed cool even as I turned into an impatient, demanding monster.

Even RIA elders Wiggum and Ruby made a cameo for some testing, and that was much appreciated as well.

known bugs

Hi all, thanks for the bug reports.

Here are a couple of known bugs:

Registration Confirmation Emails aren't going out

The Delete Item function for Weblists is not working

Some people have reported duplication in adding new items to weblists

Pictures in the "Reviewers Most Interested In" are not showing up properly, and old images are showing up

There character limit on reviews is broken - if you write more than a couple of sentences it says, "please limit yourself to 5000 characters."

Some indexes are showing weblists instead of RIA topics and vice versa.

The feature to view all of the recent reviews on your weblists is missing.

I'm sure there will be more bugs unearthed as the day goes on - please keep sending them in!

Thanks to the RIA Alpha Testers

I just wanted to give a big public thank you to some of the folks who have been poking around the new RIA and sending in bug reports. Kamylienne, Vudija, Wiseguy, Minkeydude, and Ruby have been especially helpful in pointing out bugs. Ridgewalker and StarkTruth have made a couple of excellent feature suggestions - one of which is being adopted asap (having Popular Topics and Hottest Weblists be driven by reviews and not ratings).

The new site is really coming along... if all goes well, we'll be rolling it live this weekend.

Why Weblist Ratings Matter

Here's a screenshot from one of the new Weblist index pages. Cumulative ratings of every Weblist will be displayed. Soon they will be sortable by Weblist rating.

Transparency and Ownership

One of the things that's changing with the redesign is the ability to delete your stuff from RIA whenever you want.

We're adding a big "delete my account" option via the Profile Page which will remove all ratings, helpful votes, Weblists, messages, etc. This will be a permanent delete, and irreversible.

Part of it is that I think it's the right thing to do, part of it is because I think it will will help to build trust among our community, and part of it is that it's consistent with the vision for where I want to take the site.

We're also changing the TOS so that it's clear that those that contribute reviews and lists to RateItAll will be the owners of that content. And of course, we're going to continue to help our reviewers make money off of that content.

Not to get too much into the vision, but I want people to think of RIA as a place where they store their opinions, not give away their opinions.

We're also working on ways that will allow RIA reviewers to publish their stuff on other Web sites, once it's on RIA. You can already do that through RSS, but I'm hoping to make it more user friendly. (for example, i think it would be cool if you could easily add your weblists to your MySpace page, or to your blog).

Cool Profile Pages

The page that I think has made the most progress in the redesign is the profile page. The new design is much cleaner and visually appealing, and the photo is much larger. We also have better software that prevents images from getting stretched.
